Melting Snow and Winter Steelhead
What a change in the weather! Last week we were in the middle of a blizzard and things have shifted fast. In just a few days, the temps have gone above freezing and the sunshine came out, followed by the rain. This is the first sign of spring and that leads to the beginning of our fishing season. In the past 24 hours I have seen the snow in my yard cut in half. I once had an old outfitter tell me that when the snow is gone from the yards in the valley that it was time for the stoneflies to start hatching.
My anticipation for the angling season grows as the days get longer and I dream of spring and summer days on the river. In years past I have found myself traveling to other states in search of a grab, some river time and some camaraderie. Steelhead fishing is a great way to stretch my legs or arms (or line) and shake the off winter season dust. I get my gear out, make sure the waders don’t leak and remember how to row my boat. Having a few handshakes with some heavy hitters always gets my blood pumping for the fishing season and I know the Skwala hatch is right around the corner.
If you haven’t booked your spring fishing trip yet I would highly recommend it now. My early season is pretty packed but I know plenty of quality guides who are looking to fill their spring. Make sure you reach out to me and see what Missoula has to offer in March and April!!
